When he turns 13 meteors destroy the Earth and reality becomes a video game. Dave & co. then attempt to 'play the game' in order to recreate a new world. This involves: dying, time paradoxes, existential fridge horror, memes, alternate universe selves, ectobiology, aliens, and video game narrative structure. Dave gets time powers, which facilitate him dying a bunch of times. Through various shenanigans and after a 3 year stint hurtling through space on a meteor, they manage to defeat the final boss and make a new Earth. Dave spent those 3 years unpacking his abusive childhood, getting existential about the reluctant hero trope he inhabits, and fostering sincere, mutually supportive relationships.
